SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (Friday, September 25, 2020) - The Town of Summerville will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the completed Bear Island Road Extension Project at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2020. It will take place near the intersection of Bear Island Rd. and N. Maple St.
Crews began work on July 8, 2019, and the project was substantially completed on September 15, 2020. The contract completion date is September 30, 2020.
The two-lane, 1.4 mile road connects N. Main St. to N. Maple St. Portions of Sheep Island Rd. and Berkeley Cir. were improved with the project from Main St. to Bear Island Rd. The purpose of the project is to provide traffic congestion relief in the area. Eight-foot wide multi-use paths, landscaping, a safety enhanced pedestrian crossing, and LED street lights were also included in the project to create a true multi-modal transportation facility.
The Town of Summerville funded the construction of the project, which was contracted to Banks Construction for $6,395,786.33. The Town will maintain the road upon completion.
Bear Island Rd. will open to traffic at the conclusion of the ribbon-cutting ceremony
