SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (December 5, 2017) – Summerville Fire & Rescue (SFR) graduated twelve firefighters from its second in-house recruit school this past Friday, December 1. The ceremony was held in Summerville Town Council Chambers with Deputy Chief Kyle Minick of North Charleston Fire Department providing the keynote address.
The fourteen-week program consists of an introduction to fire service and the basic skills performed by firefighters. Along with the South Carolina Fire Academy (SCFA) curriculum, recruits are taught the operating procedures of the department by certified SFR instructors. During their training, recruits start each day with physical fitness, station chores and then continue with the scheduled SCFA curriculum.
According to Fire Chief Richard Waring, “the program allows us to have a better prepared firefighter when they are assigned to a station.” Waring went on to say, “I’m very proud of the firefighters for this great accomplishment of starting their careers and our department instructors for believing in the program.” Of the twelve recruits, nine are employed by SFR and three by other fire departments in the region.
