Notice is hereby given that the Municipal Election Commission for the Town of Summerville, in conjunction with the Board of Voter Registration and Elections of Dorchester County, will conduct the Town of Summerville Municipal Election on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.
Any person wishing to register to vote in this election must do so no later than 30 days prior to the election; Sunday, October 8, 2017. If you are unsure if you’re located in the town or if you’re district is voting please contact voter registration. The following offices shall be included in this election:
- Town Council Districts 1, 3, 5
Candidates for office who wish their names to appear on the election ballot must be qualified electors, residing within their respective Districts, and file a Statement of Candidacy at Summerville Town Hall. The filing fee for the office of Council member is $100.00. There is no filing fee for the Commissioner of Public Works. The filing period begins at noon on Wednesday, August 09, 2017 and closes at noon on Friday, September 08, 2017. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Voters who are blind, physically handicapped, or unable to read or write are entitled to assistance in casting their ballot. This assistance may be provided by anyone the voter chooses except his employer, an agent of his employer, or an officer or agent of his union. The managers must be notified if assistance is needed.
Voters who are unable to enter their polling place due to physical handicap or age may vote in the vehicle which they drove, or were driven in, to the polls. When notified, the Managers will help voters using this curbside voting provision.
Registered voters who cannot vote in person may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. Absentee ballots may be obtained from the Board of Elections and Voter Registration of Dorchester County. At 9:00 a.m. on Election Day the County Election Commission will begin its examination of the absentee ballot return envelopes at the Waggoner Building, 201 Johnston Street, St. George.
On Thursday, November 9, at 1:00 p.m. a hearing to determine the validity of ballots challenged in this election will be held. This hearing will be held at the Summerville Town Hall, 200 South Main Street, Summerville.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the locations designated below. The Managers of election see that each person offering to vote takes the oath that he/she is qualified to vote at this election according to the Constitution of this State and that he/she has not voted before in this election.
