Annual Arbor Day Ceremony and Tree Planting

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (November 22, 2017) – The Annual Arbor Day Ceremony and Tree Planting will be held Friday, December 1, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Summerville Skate Park (located at the corner of John McKissick Way and East Richland Street). The event is jointly hosted by the Flowertown Garden Club and the Town of Summerville.

The program for the ceremony will include information about the history of Arbor Day, the benefits of trees in our community and the ceremonial planting of three live oaks. In total, nine live oaks and fourteen bald cypress trees will be planted on site by the Parks & Recreation Department prior to the ceremony.

The Summerville Skate Park was identified by the Town’s Green Infrastructure Plan as an area deficient in tree canopy coverage. It is a goal of the plan to focus on such areas for planting new trees. “Trees played an important role in Summerville’s history and preserving and planting new trees is essential to Summerville’s future. A healthy tree canopy can help with stormwater management, keep developed areas cool and even increase property values,” said Jessi Shuler, Director of Planning.
