To insure public safety, health and general welfare through structural strength, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation. Also, safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment. These potential hazards could arise from the alteration, repair, removal, demolition, use and occupancy of buildings, structures or premises.

By regulating the installation and maintenance of all electrical, gas, mechanical and plumbing systems, the Town requires building permits and conducts building inspections on all construction projects. Permits are required for any new construction, additions and renovations. Permits are also required for any project involving structural, electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing work.

Under this definition, the following projects require a permit: roofing work, vinyl siding installation, swimming pool installation and the installation of modular storage buildings. Fences, carpet installation and painting do not require a building permit.

The Town of Summerville staff strives to be responsive in the review of plans and in the field inspection requests. In most cases, the maximum time required for residential and commercial plan review is three weeks. Inspections can usually be performed by the end of the next work day. The amount of time can vary due to work load, weather, etc. However, it is our policy to be as expedient and helpful as possible.
