Information on the 2023 Election:
Town of Summerville Municipal Election Date: Tuesday, November 7th, 2023. Polls are open from 7 am-7 pm.
(Note: It's important to know that your voting district could have possibly changed after the 2021 election due to the council's approval of a redistricting plan. To confirm any changes, please contact the Dorchester County Board of Voter Registration and Elections at 843-832-0132.)
Seats Available:
- Mayor (1 seat -at large)
- Council District 2 (1 seat – must live in District 2)
- Council District 4 (1 seat – must live in District 4)
- Council District 6 (1 seat – must live in District 6)
- Commissioner of Public Works (1 seat, at large)
*All candidates must live within the municipal limits of the Town of Summerville and must be registered voters in South Carolina.
*The filing period for the election has ended*
(Note: The ordinance for the filing period was amended on June 8, 2023, to begin 90 days before the election and end 45 days before the election.)
Filing fees are as follows: $200 for the Mayor, $100 for the Council, $0 for the Commissioner of Public Works

PUBLIC NOTICE OF CANDIDATE FILING (Town Council District 4 Unexpired Term)
STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA COUNTY OF DORCHESTER
The Mayor and Town Council of the Town of Summerville passed a resolution to open filing for the November 7, 2023, election to immediately fill the vacancy on the Town Council for District 4. Filing during this period is only open to residents and registered voters residing in District 4. This term shall expire upon the swearing-in of the Council Member’s successor who will be sworn in on January 3, 2024.
Filing Location:
Statements of Intention of Candidacy-Nonpartisan for Town Council District 4 to fill the unexpired term will be accepted at the Business License desk located in the Summerville Town Hall at 200 South Main Street, Summerville, SC 29483. No pictures are permitted in town facilities. Please email all questions to Beth Messervy, Town Clerk, at bmesservy@summervillesc.gov.

- Filing Opens: 8:30 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023
- Filing Closes: 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2023

- Weekdays: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Filing Fee:
The filing fee for this office is $100.00. Filing fees are paid at the time of filing by candidates seeking office. Filing fee checks should be made payable to the “Town of Summerville.”
State Ethics Filings:
Candidates are required to file a Statement of Economic Interests and a Campaign Disclosure online with the State Ethics Commission at http://ethics.sc.gov. Failure to file these documents may result in a candidate fine but will not disqualify a candidate from the election. Contact the State Ethics Commission for more information.
