Wiley Johnson was born in Augusta, Georgia. After earning a BS degree from the University of Georgia, Wiley joined the United States Air Force (USAF) and was stationed at Charleston AFB where he flew C-141s for most of his career. In 1983 and 1984, Wiley volunteered for a USAF remote tour to the Middle East where he served with the United Nations Military Observer Group in Damascus, Syria and Beirut, Lebanon. In 1985, Wiley started his commercial flying career and transferred to the USAF Reserves at Charleston Airforce Base (AFB). After 24 years in the USAF and USAF Reserves, Wiley retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and Command Pilot in 1997.
Wiley was employed as a pilot with Eastern Airlines and Continental Airlines. After 9-11, he served as a deputized TSA Federal Flight Deck Officer. In 2008, after a 35-year flying career, Wiley retired as an international airline captain with Continental Airlines.
Wiley and his wife, Susan Ramsey Johnson, a Summerville native, are members of Summerville Baptist Church and enjoy supporting and serving various community organizations.
