Climate-Resilient & Bird-Friendly Municipality

The Town of Summerville is designated by Audubon South Carolina (ASC) as a Climate-Resilient and Bird-Friendly Municipality.

The ASC’s new program - Climate-Resilient and Bird-Friendly Recognition Program - celebrates schools, businesses, communities, and towns for their stewardship and commitment to the environment. The program focuses on the importance of native plants, birds and wildlife habitat, water, energy, waste, and outreach practices designed to create a resilient South Carolina. 

Good Environment Stewards

The Town of Summerville is the first town designated as a Climate-Resilient and Bird-Friendly Town in South Carolina. The Town was recognized for their good stewardship to the environment and for their efforts to provide safe habitats for birds and other wildlife. One of Summerville’s unique qualifications is their strong Green Infrastructure Plan that focuses on promoting native plants for their cultural and natural beauty, protecting water quality, promoting habitat restoration, and promoting nature-based recreation and education.

The Town of Summerville continually makes extra efforts in connecting their residents and visitors to nature. The Town of Summerville is home to Birds in Residence: Downtown Summerville (BIRDS), a major public art initiative created by the Audubon Center at Francis Beidler Forest, Sculpture in the South and Summerville D.R.E.A.M, that celebrates Summerville’s native bird species, its vibrant and historic downtown area, and Summerville’s growing reputation as a cultural arts destination.
